Playing it Safe: Does Tooth Sensitivity Need Emergency Care?

In most cases, you wouldn’t see a sensitive body part as a big deal. Everyone feels minor aches and pains at times – they’re often harmless and quickly fade. However, things change when you face sensitive teeth; they could need immediate care. You’ll want to address them carefully to avoid issues down the line. With that said, your South Portland dentist can help with that process. Here’s a solid answer to the question, “Does tooth sensitivity need emergency care?”

What Makes Teeth Sensitive?

Teeth become sensitive when their outer layer – their enamel – wears down. Once that happens, their underlying dentin becomes exposed and makes their nerves vulnerable. These nerves can then react with pain and sensitivity to various outside forces – heat, cold, etc.

Many factors can cause the initial damage to your tooth enamel, including:

  • Tooth roots exposed by gum recession
  • Bacteria-related tooth decay
  • Bruxism (i.e., teeth grinding)
  • Chips, cracks, or breaks in your teeth
  • Damaged restorations (i.e., fillings, crowns, etc.)

When is the Sensitivity an Emergency?

Most cases of tooth sensitivity aren’t urgent; the sensation usually disappears in moments. Still, some can become real emergencies depending on the situation.

Your sensitivity may be an emergency if it features severe symptoms. In particular, signs like throbbing pain, visible damage, and oral bleeding should be noted. Such things often indicate a tooth infection – a serious dental problem that can lead to tooth loss and worse.

If you think your sensitivity is urgent, see your dentist immediately. They can diagnose and treat the underlying cause for you.

How Do Dentists Treat Sensitive Teeth?

Your dentist may treat your sensitive teeth with one of the following procedures:

  • Fluoride Treatment – If the main issue is that your dentin is slightly exposed, your dentist could place fluoride gel on your teeth. Doing so will insulate the dental nerves and prevent pain.
  • Dental Crowns – When the tooth’s sensitivity stems from chips or cracks, a dentist may suggest a dental crown. This cap will cover the sensitive area and protect your dentin from stimuli.
  • Root Canal Therapy – Sensitivity due to an infection may require a root canal. For this treatment, the dentist will remove your tooth’s infected tissue and fill the resulting space.

Given the above, does your tooth sensitivity need emergency care? Consult your dental provider to find out for sure!
